- Agricultural and Biological Engineering
The Master of Science, Master of Engineering, Doctor of Philosophy and Engineer are offered with graduate programs in agricultural and biological engineering through the College of Engineering.
A Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy in agricultural and biological engineering are offered in the area of agricultural operations management and applied science through the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences.
- Agricultural Education and Communication
The Department of Agricultural Education and Communication offers major work for a Doctor of Philosophy, which includes areas of specialization in teaching and learning, communication, leadership and volunteer development, and adult and extension education.
A Master of Science is offered with options in agricultural communication, agricultural leadership education, agricultural extension and agricultural education.
- Agronomy
The department offers a Doctor of Philosophy and Master of Science (thesis and non-thesis option) in agronomy with specialization in crop ecology, crop nutrition and physiology, crop production, weed science, genetics, cytogenetics or plant breeding.
Graduate programs emphasize the development and subsequent application of basic principles in each specialization to agronomic plants in Florida and throughout the topics.
- Animal Sciences
The Department of Animal Sciences offers a Master of Agriculture, Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy in animal sciences with emphasis in beef, dairy cattle or equine.
Specializations are available in breading and genetics, management, nutrition, physiology, molecular biology and meat science.
- Entomology and Nematology
The Entomology and Nematology department offers a Master of Science (thesis and non-thesis options) and Doctor of Philosophy with specializations in entomology, nematology and pest management.
Members of the graduate faculty include the department resident faculty, faculty located on University of Florida campuses away from Gainesville, scientists with other state of Florida agencies such as the Division of Plant Industry and Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services and scientists of the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
- Family, Youth and Community Sciences
The Department of Family, Youth and Community Sciences offers two graduate social science degrees. A Master of Science in family, youth and community sciences is a research degree that prepares students to conduct original research about problems, issues and policies affecting families, youth and communities.
The Master of family, youth and community sciences prepares students for mid-level leadership positions in public and private organizations, agencies and businesses that address the needs of families, youth and communities.
- Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences
The Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences conducts research, teaching and extension programs in four areas: sustainable fisheries, aquaculture, aquatic animal health, and conservation and management of aquatic environments.
The department offers graduate study leading to a Master of Science, Master of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences (non-thesis), and Doctor of Philosophy with a program in fisheries and aquatic sciences.
- Food and Resource Economics
A Master of Agribusiness (non-thesis), Master of Science (thesis and non-thesis option) and Doctor of Philosophy are offered in food and resource economics.
Areas of specialization include agricultural business management, marketing, production, economic development, econometrics, and resource and environmental economics.
The department participates in programs with the centers for Latin American Studies, African Studies, Tropical Agriculture, the School of Natural Resources and Environment, the Levin College of Law, the Florida Sea Grant College Program and the International Trade and Policy Center.
- Food Science and Human Nutrition
The department offers programs leading to a Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy in food science and human nutrition.
The Ph.D. program includes concentrations in food science or nutritional sciences. The M.S. program offers concentration in nutritional sciences. The Institute of Food Technologists and the American Society for Nutritional Sciences recognize these concentrations.
The department also offers the American Dietetics Association-approved dietetics internship leading to the M.S. degree and eligibility for the registration examination.
- Horticultural Science
The horticultural science graduate program, administered jointly by the Environmental Horticulture and Horticultural Sciences departments, offers graduate programs leading to a Master of Science (thesis or non-thesis option) and Doctor of Philosophy.
Specializations within horticultural science include plant breeding and genetics, plant production and nutrient management, postharvest biology, sustainable/organic practice and weed science.
Specializations within environmental horticulture include anatomy and development, ecology, taxonomy, breeding and genetics, tissue culture, stress physiology and plant biotechnology.
- Microbiology and Cell Science
Graduate study is offered leading to a Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy in microbiology and cell science, with emphasis in one or more of the disciplines of biochemistry, cell biology and microbiology.
Instruction and guidance are collaborative among faculty in the colleges of Agricultural and Life Sciences, Liberal Arts and Sciences, and Medicine. Research spans broad areas in the cellular and molecular aspects of bacterial, plant and animal life functions.
- Plant Molecular and Cellular Biology
The interdepartmental program in plant molecular and cellular biology offers a Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy with a specialization in plant molecular genetics, biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology, pathology and physiology.
Participating faculty in the colleges of Agricultural and Life Sciences and Liberal Arts and Sciences are from the academic units of agronomy, botany, environmental horticulture, forest resources and conservation, horticultural sciences, microbiology and cell science, and plant pathology.
- Plant Pathology
The Department of Plant Pathology offers graduate studies leading to a Master of Science (thesis and non-thesis option) and Doctor of Philosophy.
The department also participates in the Doctor of Plant Medicine interdisciplinary professional degree.
A student may pursue studies in fungal plant pathology, plant bacteriology, plant virology, diagnostics, control, and also molecular and biochemical aspects of host-pathogen systems, biological control of pathogens and weeds, epidemiology, etiology, genetics, of host-pathogen systems, soil microbiology and pathogen taxonomy.
- Soil and Water Science
The Soil and Water Science department offers a Master of Agriculture, Master of Science (thesis or non-thesis option) and Doctor of Philosophy in soil and water science with specializations in soil science and environmental science.
In addition students can also develop specializations in several interdisciplinary areas, including biogeochemistry, ecology, hydrologic sciences, tropical agriculture, turfgrass management and wetland science.
The department also offers a Master of Science (thesis or non-thesis option) specialization in environmental science via distance education.
- Wildlife Ecology and Conservation
The Department of Wildlife Ecology and Conservation offers a Master of Science (thesis and non-thesis option) and Doctor of Philosophy in wildlife ecology and conservation.
Program emphases include wildlife biology, ecology, and management; landscape ecology and restoration; human dimensions; tropical and international conservation; and conservation education.

The college offers a Ph.D. program in design, construction and planning with one option being an emphasis in building construction, including sustainable construction, information systems, facilities management, construction safety, affordable housing, productivity and human resource management.

- Interior Design
The college offers a program leading to a Doctor of Philosophy in design, construction and planning with an area of specialization in interior design.
The Master of Interior Design provides opportunities for students to direct their attention toward a variety of topics, including historic preservation and restoration of interior spaces; design for special populations, investigation and application of design technology, materials, and lighting; design education; issues of indoor air quality and sustainability; environment and behavior research theory, and applications in interior design.
- Landscape Architecture
The college offers a program leading to a Doctor of Philosophy in design, construction and planning with a specialization in landscape architecture.
The Master of Landscape Architecture is a fully accredited advanced professional degree and first professional degree.
Graduation from an accredited program is an essential first step toward licensing in Florida and other states that regulate the practice of landscape architecture.
The mission of the Department of Landscape Architecture is teaching, research and service toward conserving, enhancing and creating outdoor spaces for their users in the natural and built environments.
- Urban and Regional Planning
The college offers a program leading to a Doctor of Philosophy in design, construction and planning.
Areas of specialization within this program include architecture, building construction, interior design, landscape architecture and urban and regional planning.
The department offers graduate work leading to a Master of Arts in Urban and Regional Planning (M.A.U.R.P.). The urban and regional planning curriculum is designed to provide a set of core students and contextual projects that prepare the graduate for the practice of planning in public or private agencies at both national and international levels.

- Management
The Management department offers graduate work leading to a Master of Science in business administration with a concentration in management and a Master of Arts in business administration with a concentration in international business.
They also offer a Ph.D. in business administration with a concentration in management, as well as a concentration in the Master of Business Administration program.
- Marketing
The Marketing department offers graduate work leading to the PhD degree in business administration, the MS degree in business administration with a concentration in marketing and a concentration in the Master of Business Administration. An internet-delivered MS degree in business administration with a concentration in retailing is also offered.
- Master of Business Administration
A Master of Business Administration is designed to give students the conceptual knowledge for understanding the functions and behaviors common to business organizations and the analytical, problem-solving and decision-making skills essential for effective management.
The program offers certificate programs in financial services, supply chain management, decision and information sciences, e-commerce, entrepreneurship and technology management, and global management.
The program also offers concentrations in finance, security analysis, real estate, competitive strategy, marketing, entrepreneurship, decision and information sciences, management, global management, human resource management, Latin American business management, international studies, arts administration and sports administration.
A program of joint studies leading to a Master of Business Administration and Juris Doctor is offered under the joint auspices of the Warrington College of Business Administration and the Levin College of Law.

- Dental Sciences
The College of Dentistry offers advanced and graduate education programs in dental sciences with concentrations in craniofacial pain, dental biomaterials, endodontics, oral biology, oral and maxillofacial pathology, oral and maxillofacial surgery, orthodontics, pediatric dentistry, periodontics and prosthodontics.

Program areas include school counseling and guidance for positions in elementary, middle and secondary schools; mental health counseling; and marriage and family counseling for positions in community, private, educational, or business and industry counseling agencies or settings.
The school counseling and guidance; mental health counseling; and marriage and family counseling programs are accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Education Programs.
- Educational Leadership, Policy and Foundations
The Department offers programs leading to a Master of Education (non-thesis) and Master of Arts in Education (thesis) in curriculum and instruction with course concentrations in curriculum and instructional leadership, in education leadership with specializations in elementary and secondary administration and in school business management, in foundations of education; and student personnel in higher education.
The department also offers a Specialist in Education, Doctor of Education, Doctor of Philosophy in education leadership with specialization and secondary administration in foundations of education with specializations in social, historical and philosophical foundations, and comparative and international education within social foundations/in higher education administration with specializations in community college leadership and university leadership.
The department and the Levin College of Law also offer a joint program leading to the Ph.D. in educational leadership and the Juris Doctorate.
- Educational Psychology
The department offers a Master of Education, Master of Arts in Education (with thesis), Specialist in Education, Doctor of Education and Doctor of Philosophy with programs in educational psychology, research and evaluation methodology, and school psychology.
Specific areas of specialization include human development, personality theory, learning theory and general educational psychology within the educational psychology program; and research methodology, education statistics, and measurement and evaluation within the research and evaluation methodology program.
- Special Education
The department offers programs leading to a Master of Education or Master of Arts in Education , the sixth year Specialist in Education and a Doctor of Education or Doctor of Philosophy.
Program specializations include mild and severe disabilities. In addition to specializations students may emphasize disabling conditions at developmental levels ranging from preschool through vocational levels.
- Teaching and Learning
The School of Teaching and Learning offers programs leading to a Master of Education (non-thesis), Master of Arts in Education (thesis), Specialist in Education, Doctor of Education and Doctor of Philosophy in curriculum and instruction.
Areas of specialization are curriculum and teacher education, early childhood education, educational technology, elementary education, English education, ESOL/bilingual education, mathematics, education, language and literacy education (including children’s literature, language arts and reading education), science education and environmental education and social studies education.
The nationally recognized ProTeach graduate program leads to the M.Ed. and state certification as a classroom teacher.

- Biomedical Engineering
The mission of the Biomedical Engineering (BME) department is to educate students with strong engineering and science backgrounds for a master’s and/or Ph.D. in biomedical engineering.
BME graduates typically apply their skills and training to engineering solutions to clinical problems in medicine. The Biomedical Engineering program also offers a BME certificate program.
The department currently focuses on six principal areas: biomechanics, cellular and tissue engineering, biomedical imaging and signal processing, cardiac engineering, neural engineering and bio-micro-electrico-mechanical systems.
The faculty includes joint, affiliate and adjunct appointments with other departments in the College of Engineering, College of Medicine and local industry. This diversity ensures students have both the highest quality education and opportunities for research.
- Chemical Engineering
The department offers Ph.D., M.E., M.S.(thesis) and M.S.(non-thesis) in chemical engineering, which requires coursework in three core areas: the chemical engineering core, the chemical engineering science and systems core, and the research specialty core.
Courses may be from other departments or chemical engineering courses such as energy conversion and fuel cells, corrosion, polymer science, microelectronics, particle science and technology, process economics and bioengineering.
- Civil and Coastal Engineering
The department offers a graduate program for civil engineering. The civil engineering program offers the Master of Civil Engineering, Master of Engineering, Master of Science, Engineer and Doctor of Philosophy.
The department also offers a graduate program for coastal and oceanographic engineering. The coastal and oceanographic engineering program offers the Master of Engineering, Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy.
All degrees except the Ph.D. are available in a thesis or non-thesis option. All degree programs include areas of specialization in construction, civil engineering management, geotechnical engineering, water resources and hydrology, pubic works, structural engineering, civil engineering materials, geosensing systems engineering, surveying and mapping, coastal engineering, oceanographic engineering and offshore structures and transportation engineering.
- Computer and Information Sciences and Engineering
The department offers a Master of Engineering, Master of Science, Engineer and Ph.D. in computer engineering through the College of Engineering, a Master of Science in digital arts and sciences through the College of Engineering and a Master of Science in computer science through the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
Areas of specialization within the programs of CISE cover programming languages, database management, software engineering, computer graphics, computer vision, operating systems, compilers, performance measurement, artificial intelligence, architecture, simulation, parallel processing, distributed computing, computer communication and theory of computation.
- Electrical and Computer Engineering
The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering offers a Master of Engineering, Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy.
Graduate study and research are offered in communications, computer engineering, device and physical electronics, digital signal processing, electric energy systems, electromagnetics, electronic circuits, intelligent information systems, photonics and systems and controls.
- Environmental Engineering Sciences
Graduate study is offered leading to a Master of Engineering, Master of Science, Engineer and Doctor of Philosophy in environmental engineering sciences.
The department has four broadly defined graduate research and education areas: air and waste management, environmental hydrology, systems ecology and ecological engineering, and water and wastewater science and engineering.
The Environmental Engineering Science department, in partnership with the Levin College of Law, offers a joint program leading to a M.S. or M.E. in environmental engineering sciences and the Juris Doctorate.
- Industrial and Systems Engineering
The Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering offers a Masters of Engineering and a Master of Science, each with a thesis or nonthesis option, with specialization in engineering management, manufacturing and logistics systems engineering, operations research, quality engineering and special interest options such as health systems.
In addition, the department offers a Engineer and a Doctor of Philosophy degree with specialization in linear, combinatorial, nonlinear and global optimization; supply chain management and e-commerce; financial engineering; manufacturing management, facilities location and layout; quality engineering and stochastic processes.
- Materials Science and Engineering
The Department of Materials Science and Engineering offers a Master of Science, Master of Engineering, Doctor of Philosophy and the Engineer degree.
Degrees may be obtained with specialization in metal, ceramic, polymeric or electronic materials.
Also, a joint Master of Science/Juris Doctorate (thesis/non-thesis) program is offered in conjunction with the Department of Materials Science and Engineering and the Levin College of Law.
- Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering offers a Master of Science with or without thesis, Master of Engineering with or without thesis, Engineer and Doctor of Philosophy in aerospace engineering and mechanical engineering.
There are four areas of specialization studies: thermal science and fluid dynamics; solid mechanics; dynamics, systems, and control; and design, manufacturing, and robotics. Within a specialization there are unique opportunites to conduct analytical, experimental, and/or numerical study in a wide variety of challenging problems.
- Nuclear and Radiological Engineering
The department offers a Master of Science, Master of Engineering, Engineer and Doctor of Philosophy in nuclear engineering science with emphasis in nuclear power engineering, health physics, medical physics, engineering physics and biomedical engineering.
The medical physics and health physics options are offered through interdepartmental programs in cooperation with the College of Medicine and the Department of Environmental Engineering Sciences. The Biomedical Engineering program is collegewide.

- Art and Art History
The School offers a Master of Fine Arts in art with concentrations in ceramics, creative photography, drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, graphic design and electronic intermedia.
The Master of Art in Art Education is offered for prospective students who hold a degree in art education or have teaching experience in a K-12 school art program or alternative art education setting.
The Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy in Art History are offered with areas of emphasis in Ancient, Medieval, Renaissance/Baroque, Modern and Non-Western art history.
The Master of Arts in Museology (Museum Studies) is an interdisciplinary program allowing students to work in a disciplinary emphasis (art history, anthropology, history, education, or the natural sciences) while completing a concentrated study in professional museum practices.
The Master of Arts in Digital Arts and Sciences is an interdisciplinary program for students with an undergraduate degree in one of the fine arts or liberal arts and a body of work that demonstrates accomplishment in the intended area.
- Music
The School of Music offers programs leading to a Master of Music in music and music education.
Program concentrations in music include choral conducting, composition, instrumental conducting, music history and literature, music theory, performance and sacred music.
In addition, the School of Music offers a Doctor of Philosophy in music and in music education. The Ph.D. program in music includes concentration in music history and literature, with options in traditional musicology and ethnomusicology, and composition, with options in acoustic and electroacoustic specialization. The program emphasis for the Ph.D. in music education is on college music teaching.
- Theatre and Dance
The graduate program offered by the Department of Theatre and Dance leads to a Master of Fine Arts in theatre performance or production.
The M.F.A. degree prepares students for professional entry in performance, production or teaching. The program emphasizes the study and practice of theatre as an art and discipline. Students of acting and design study concepts of theatre together while working in their areas of specialization. Focus is on the collaboration and synthesis of theatre artistry.

- Forest Resources and Conservation
The school offers programs leading to a Master of Forest Resources and Conservation (professional, non-thesis), Master of Science (with thesis) and Doctor of Philosophy in forest resources and conservation.
Specializations include agroforestry, biometrics, biotechnology, ecology, forest economics, ecotourism, environmental education, genetic, geographic information systems, hydrology, resource management, forest nutrition, management operations, pathology, physiology, policy, reforestation, silviculture, soils, tropical forestry and urban forestry.

A program leading to a Master of Science.Areas of concentration for the master’s program include athletic training/sports medicine (thesis/non-thesis), biomechanics (thesis), clinical exercise physiology (non-thesis), exercise physiology (thesis), human performance (non-thesis) motor learning/control (thesis) and sport and exercise psychology (thesis).
- Health Education and Behavior
The Department of Health Education and Behavior offers the health behavior concentration for a Ph.D. in health and human performance and a Master of Science in health education and behavior with thesis and non-thesis options.
Master’s degree specializations include community health education, health communication, health promotion, health program planning and evaluation, pedagogy of physical activity and health and school health education.
- Recreation, Parks and Tourism
A Master of Science in Recreational Studies is offered by the Department of Recreation, Parks and Tourism. The master’s program provides preparation for recreation professionals and positions of leadership in planning, developing and administering reacreation programs in a variety of employment settings.
The department participates in a Ph.D. program in health and human performance. The doctoral program is offered through the College of Health and Human Performance with specializations in therapeutic recreation, tourism and natural resource recreation.

- Advertising
The Department of Advertising offers a Master of Advertising, which is designed to develop leaders in the profession by providing students with the theoretical, research and decision-making skills essential for strategic advertising and integrated communications planning.
Students are also provided with the opportunity to develop expertise in a specialized area: account management, research, creative strategy, media planning, international and cross-cultural advertising, new technology, special market advertising, new technology and advertising sales management.
- Mass Communication
Through the Division of Graduate Studies and Research, the College of Journalism and Communications offers a Doctor of Philosophy, Master of Arts in Mass Communication (thesis or non-thesis option), and Master of Advertising (thesis).
Doctoral students work closely with faculty members in research leading to a dissertation embodying a humanities, law/policy or social sciences approach.
Master’s students may complete a thesis in advertising, journalism, public relations, telecommunications, documentary, international communication, political communication or science/health communication.

- Comparative Law
A LL.M. in Comparative Law is designed for graduates of foreign law schools who want to enhance their understanding of the American legal system and the English common law system from which it evolved.
A special curriculum for students enrolled in this program can result in the simultaneous award of the Certificate of Specialization in International Tax Studies.
- Taxation
Graduate study in the field of taxation leading to a Master of Laws in Taxation is available in the Levin College of Law.
Applicants apply to the Graduate School and must hold a law degree from an accredited law school.
The graduate tax program offers the nation’s only Doctor of Juridical Science (S.J.D.) in Taxation, designed for those interested in tax law teaching and scholarship.
- International Taxation
The LL.M. in International Taxation is designed as a challenging and rewarding one-year course of study for full-time students that will help prepare them for careers in tax law.
The program features outstanding tax faculty, a superb international tax curriculum and excellent students with distinguished records of achievement. The program is open to U.S. and international students. Graduates of U.S. law schools and law schools outside the U.S. will be considered for admission on the basis of potential for distinguished performance in the program, academic record, professional experience and geographical factors. Admission will be for the fall semester and enrollment is not expected to exceed 25 students.

- Anthropology
The Department of Anthropology offers graduate work leading to a Master of Arts (thesis or non-thesis option) and Doctor of Philosophy.
Graduate training is offered in applied anthropology, social and cultural anthropology, archeology, anthropological linguistics and physical/biological anthropology.
- Astronomy
The Department of Astronomy offers graduate programs leading to a Master of Science or Doctor of Philosophy in astronomy.
Students have opportunities to work on a broad range of astronomical problems using in-house, national and international, ground and space-based facilities.
- Botany
The Department of Botany offers graduate work leading to a Master of Science, Master of Agriculture, Master of Science in Teaching and Doctor of Philosophy.
Areas of study include biochemistry, molecular biology, physiology, ecology, population genetics, systematics and evolution.
- Chemistry
The department offers a Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy with a major in chemistry and specialization in biochemistry and analytical, organic, inorganic or physical chemistry.
The non-thesis Master of Science in Teaching is also offered with a major in chemistry.
- Classics
The department offers the Doctor of Philosophy in classical studies, the Master of Arts in classical studies or Latin, the Master of Latin and the Master of Arts in Teaching in Latin.
Specializations within the Ph.D. program are Latin and Roman studies, classical civilization and philology.
- Communication Sciences and Disorders
Graduate programs in the department lead to a Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy in communication sciences and disorders and to the Doctor of Audiology.
Major areas of emphasis include audiology, phonetic science and speech-language pathology.
Graduate specializations and programs in speech-language pathology and audiology are accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation/American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.
The Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders, in conjunction with the Department of Communicative Disorders in the College of Public Health and Health Professions, offers the Doctor of Audiology (Au.D).
- Criminology and Law
Criminology and Law is an interdisciplinary unit that offers a Master of Arts with both a thesis and non-thesis option, a joint M.A./J.D. degree program and the Doctor of Philosophy.
The graduate program in criminology and law has two areas of special emphasis: crime and justice, and law and society.
- English
The Department of English offers a Master of Arts (thesis and non-thesis options) and a Doctor of Philosophy in English with specializations in literature, American studies, critical theory, cultural studies, film and media studies, feminisms, genders and sexualities, postcolonial studies, composition and rhetoric and children’s literature.
The department also offers a Master of Fine Arts in creative writing.
- Geography
The Department of Geography offers a Master of Arts, Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy.
Three main areas of specialization are provided for graduate research: economic and business geography and policy, resource management and land use and land cover change, and physical geography.
- Geological Sciences
The Department of Geological Sciences offers programs leading to a Master of Science (thesis), Master of Science in Teaching (nonthesis) and Doctor of Philosophy.
Five primary areas of emphasis in the department’s research and teaching programs include: environmental geology, earth system science, tectonophysics, chemical geodynamics, marine geology and paleontology.
- Germanic and Slavic Studies
The department offers a Master of Arts (thesis and non-thesis) and a Ph.D. in German.
Prerequisite for admission to graduate work is an undergraduate major in the field, including advanced courses in both literature and language. Graduate students normally teach as a part of their training.
- History
The Department of History offers a Master of Arts with fields of specialization in African, East Asian, Medieval, European, Latin American and United States history, and the history of science.
Also offered is a Doctor of Philosophy with fields of specialization in Latin American, African, European and United States history, and the history of science.
The Department of History and the Levin College of Law offer a program in legal history leading to either the M.A. or the Ph.D. in history and the Juris Doctorate.
- Latin American Studies
The Center for Latin American Studies offers an interdisciplinary Master of Arts, and certificates and minors in Latin American studies in conjunction with disciplinary degrees in the colleges of Agricultural and Life Sciences, Design, Construction and Planning, Business Administration, Education, Fine Arts, Journalism and Communications, Law, and Liberal Arts and Sciences.
- Linguistics
Linguistics offers graduate programs leading to a Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy with specializations in the core areas of the discipline (theoretical and descriptive phonetic, phonology, syntax, discourse, semantics, morphology, language and gender, cross-cultural communication, linguistic change) and applied linguistics (sociolinguistics, second language acquisition, psycholinguistics).
The Certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language is offered to degree-seeking students in applied linguistics and related disciplines.
- Mathematics
The Department of Mathematics offers a Doctor of Philosophy, Master of Science, Master of Arts, Master of Arts in Teaching and Master of Science in Teaching, each with a major in mathematics.
The department offers a co-major program in conjunction with the Statistics department leading to the Doctor of Philosophy in mathematics and statistics.
The department is also a partner in interdisciplinary concentration in quantitative finance, along with the Statistics, Industrial and Systems Engineering, and Finance, Insurance and Real Estate departments.
- Philosophy
The department offers studies leading to a Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy.
The M.A. is intended to provide students with skills needed for advanced work in philosophy, with broad competence in the history of philosophy and with the background necessary to pursue advanced study in the analytic or continental traditions.
Completion of the M.A. degree is a prerequisite for advancement to the Ph.D. program. The Ph.D. requires substantial work in advanced seminars and independent research toward the doctoral dissertation, as well as the development of teaching skills and knowledge. These requirements work together to prepare the student for work in philosophy at the professional level.
- Physics
The Department of Physics offers a Master of Science (thesis or non-thesis) and Doctor of Philosophy.
The non-thesis Master of Science in Teaching is also offered.
Specific areas of specialization for graduate research include astrophysics and cosmology, atomic and molecular physics, biological physics, chemical physics, condensed matter physics, nuclear physics, particle physics, statistical physics and low temperature physics.
- Plant Molecular and Cellular Biology
The interdepartmental program in plant molecular and cellular biology offers a Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy with a specialization in plant molecular genetics, biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology, pathology and physiology.
Participating faculty in the colleges of Agricultural and Life Sciences and Liberal Arts and Sciences are from the academic units of agronomy, botany, environmental horticulture, forest resources and conservation, horticultural sciences, microbiology and cell science and plant pathology.
- Political Science
The Department of Political Science offers two degree programs, political science and political science-international relations.
Three degrees are offered in each program: Master of Arts in Teaching (non-thesis), Master of Arts (thesis or nonthesis option) and Doctor of Philosophy.
The M.A. degree may be taken in conjunction with certificate programs in political campaigning, public affairs and international development policy and administration. Students in these certificate programs pursue the non-thesis option.
Joint degree programs culminating in the Master of Arts in political science and Juris Doctor or Master of Arts in political science-international relations are also available.
The fields of study open to Ph.D. students include comparative politics, American politics, public policy, international relations, political behavior and political theory.
- Psychology
The Department of Psychology offers a Master of Science and the Doctor of Philosophy. Students are not accepted for a terminal master’s degree.
Doctoral areas of specialization include the teaching and research area of cognition and sensory processes, comparative, developmental, behavior analysis, behavioral neuroscience, social psychology and counseling psychology.
The training program in counseling psychology is accredited by the American Psychological Association.
The Department of Psychology and the Levin College of Law offer a joint degree program leading to a Ph.D. in psychology and a juris doctorate.
- Religion
The Department of Religion offers a Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy in three specializations: religion in the Americas, religions of Asia, and religion and nature.
The first two specializations provide advanced education in the academic study of religion with an inclusive focus on religions and religious experience of peoples in North, Central and South America or South and East Asia as well as in the Asian diasporas.
The third specialization addresses in a systematic way the religious and ethical dimensions of human attitudes and practices regarding the natural world.
- Romance Languages and Literatures
The department offers programs leading to the Ph.D in romance languages and literatures, with specialization in French or Spanish, and the M.A. in French or Spanish (either with or without thesis).
Candidates for the master’s degree have a choice of two options, one oriented toward literature and culture, the other toward language and linguistics.
In conjunction with their master’s or doctoral work, students specializing in Spanish may also earn a Certificate in Latin American Studies.
Though a graduate degree is not given in Portuguese, extensive course offerings permit students to develop a strong minor in Portuguese language and Brazilian literature.
- Sociology
The Department of Sociology offers the Master of Arts with both a thesis and a nonthesis option and the Doctor of Philosophy with these areas of special emphasis: deviance; families and gender; health, aging and the life course; racial and ethnic studies; and Latin American studies.

- Statistics
Graduate programs are available leading to Master of Science in Statistics, Master of Statistics and Doctor of Philosophy.
The department also offers a co-major program in conjunction with the Fisher School of Accounting, leading to the Doctor of Philosophy in statistics and business administration-accounting.

- Women’s Studies
The women’s studies program is administered by the Center for Women’s Studies and Gender Research. It is an interdisciplinary forum for master’s and doctoral students admitted to graduate programs throughout the university.
The center offers the Master of Arts (M.A.) thesis degree and the Master of Women’s Studies (M.W.S.) non-thesis degree.
Graduate faculty from many departments and colleges campus-wide participate in the doctoral-level interdisciplinary concentration in women’s/gender studies.
The Graduate Certificate in Women’s Studies and the Graduate Certificate in Gender and Development for master’s and doctoral students are offered in conjunction with degree program in other academic units.

Laboratory research is supported by funding from the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, state agencies and private foundations.
- Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
The Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology faculty mentor Ph.D. students in the College of Medicine interdisciplinary program (IDP) in medical sciences. The research expertise of the faculty spans the areas of cell biology, metabolism, molecular biology and physical biochemistry/structural biology.
- Clinical Investigation
This unique concentration in the Master of Science program in medical sciences was developed by an interdisciplinary faculty to provide sound didactic background in the foundations of clinical research.
For clinically trained M.D.s and other doctoral-level health professionals, the M.S. concentration in clinical investigation may be part of a more complete training experience in clinical research offered through the College of Medicine as the Advanced Postgraduate Program in Clinical Investigation (APPCI).
- Epidemiology and Health Policy Research
The Department of Epidemiology and Health Policy Research offers a Master of Science in epidemiology with concentrations in biostatistics and health policy. Three programs of study are available:
The general epidemiology degree program is designed to produce graduates specializing in epidemiology with an emphasis in research methodology.
The epidemiology program with a concentration in health policy is designed to produce graduates who have a broad background in epidemiology with emphases in health policy, outcomes and evaluation research.
The epidemiology program with a concentration in biostatistics is designed to produce graduates who have a broad background in epidemiology with expertise in biostatistics. This concentration is a joint endeavor between the College of Medicine's Department of Epidemiology and Health Policy Research and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences' Department of Statistics.
- Medical Sciences – Interdisciplinary Program (IDP)
The goal of the IDP is to prepare students for a diversity of careers in research and teaching in academic and commercial settings.
The program provides a modern, comprehensive graduate education in biomedical sciences while providing both maximum program flexibility and appropriate specialization for advanced training.
The IDP represents a cooperative effort of six interdisciplinary advanced concentrations in biochemistry and molecular biology, genetics, immunology and microbiology, molecular cell biology, neuroscience and physiology and pharmacology.
A Master of Science in Medical Sciences with specializations in genetics, microbiology and biochemistry is offered in the College of Medicine. In conjunction with other colleges the College of Medicine also offers several M.S. and joint-degree programs.
The College of Medicine also offers the M.D./Ph.D. training program to highly qualified students.
- Neuroscience
The graduate faculty of the Department of Neuroscience participates in the interdisciplinary program (IDP) in medical sciences, leading to the Doctor of Philosophy.
Neuroscience is one of the six advanced concentration areas of the IDP. The faculty associated with these advanced concentrations have expertise in neuroanatomy, molecular and cellular neurobiology, neuroembryology, aging, neurotransmitter chemistry and pharmacology, neuroendocrinology and immunology, cellular and molecular neuro-oncoloy, cellular and membrane neurophysiology, somatosensory and motor systems, transplantation neurobiology, injury and repair of the CNS and neurobehavioral sciences.
- Oral Biology
The Department of Oral Biology, a unit of the College of Dentistry, offers graduate study leading to a Doctor of Philosophy as part of the College of Medicine's interdisciplinary program (IDP) in medical sciences.
Areas of emphasis include application of microbiological, immunological and molecular biological concepts and technologies to answer questions about host-pathogen interactions in oral disease, vaccine development, oral microbial physiology, oral bacterial biofilm biology, microbial antibiotic resistance, and autoimmune diseases.

The Department of Pharmaceutics offers the Doctor of Philosophy in pharmaceutical sciences.
Pharmaceutics is the scientific endeavor concerned with the design, formulation, evaluation and use of drug delivery systems. Its domain extends from studies of physiochemical properties of drugs and related molecules to investigations of the mechanisms of physiological processes affecting drug delivery and therapeutic effectiveness.
- Pharmacodynamics
The Department of Pharmacodynamics offers the Doctor of Philosophy and Master of Science in Pharmacy in the pharmaceutical sciences with a concentration in pharmacodynamics.
The department participates in the interdisciplinary toxicology concentration. Pharmacodynamics is an integrated field of study involving pharmacology, physiology and toxicology in a holistic approach to drug action in living systems.

The department offers the Master of Science in Pharmacy and Doctor of Philosophy in pharmaceutical sciences with a concentration in pharmacy health care administration.

The department’s programs include clinical psychology studies leading to the Ph.D. in psychology. The department works in conjunction with the Center for Clinical and Health Psychology, a teaching and service unit of Shands at UF. - Communicative Disorders

- Health Services Administration
The Department of Health Services Administration offers degree programs at both the master’s and doctoral levels.
The Master of Health Administration is designed to prepare individuals for management positions in health care. The department also offers an executive Master of Health Administration program, a weekend program designed for health professionals who may live and work at some distance from campus.
At the doctoral level, the department offers the Ph.D. in health services research, which is designed to prepare graduates to investigate and evaluate the complexities of health care systems in the United States and elsewhere.
- Occupational Therapy
The Department of Occupational Therapy offers graduate programs in occupational therapy leading to the Master of Health Science (on-campus non-thesis and thesis options and distance learning non-thesis option) and the entry-level Master of Occupational Therapy.
The distance-learning degree option for the Master of Health Science is specifically intended to meet the needs of the working professional.
- Physical Therapy
The graduate program leading to a Doctorate of Physical Therapy is designed for professional licensure and careers in physical therapy.
The curriculum emphasizes the scientific method and the requirements of the scientific process in clinical practice.
The program emphasizes the scientific basis of clinical practice and is designed to strengthen the physical therapist in the areas of critical analysis of the clinical and basic science literature.
- Public Health
The College of Public Health and Health Professions offers the interdisciplinary Master of Public Health degree in partnership with several other college units and the state’s area health education centers. This nonthesis program is designed to prepare students to become effective public health scientists, practitioners and educators.
Areas of study include biostatistics, epidemiology, environmental health, public health and management policy, public health practice and the social and behavioral sciences.
- Rehabilitation Counseling
The department offers a Master of Health Science (thesis and nonthesis options) in rehabilitation counseling.
The program is accredited by the Commission on Rehabilitation Education and is designed to prepare professional personnel to assist people to overcome mental, physical or emotional handicaps toward personal and vocational independence.
- Rehabilitation Science
The interdisciplinary Ph.D. program in rehabilitation science is offered through the College of Public Health and Heath Professions.
Students are given the opportunity to develop skills in teaching, research, service leadership and interdisciplinary teamwork.

The college offers three areas of specialization within the veterinary medical sciences program: large and small animal clinical science, physiologic sciences, infectious diseases and experimental pathology.
The college participates in the interdisciplinary specialization in toxicology in cooperation with other departments and colleges in the Health Science Center, the Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences and the Center for Environmental Human Toxicology.
