2. Complete your financial aid application: the FAFSA.
We have good news! Most people complete the FAFSA in less than an hour! The best way to secure a full aid package is to apply early, as soon as it opens. The 2025-26 FAFSA will open on or before December 1, 2024. If you need help filling out your FAFSA, contact Federal Student Aid; call them at 1-800-433-3243.
Complete the FAFSAHow do I fill out the FAFSA?
- Create your Federal Student Aid account at studentaid.gov/fsa-id/create-account.
- Gather your documents. You will need your parents' social security numbers (if they have social security numbers) if you're a dependent student.
- Start your 2025-26 FAFSA at fafsa.gov
- List the University of Florida as a school of choice.
- If you're a dependent student, provide contact information for your parent contributors.
- Submit your application.
- Follow up to ensure your parents complete their portion. Check the status under the “My Activity” section after you sign in.
Now it's our turn! Once we receive the FAFSA application information, we will process the file and send admitted students an email notification to view their comprehensive aid offer around March 2025.

Two Types of Aid: Merit & Need-Based
Once we receive your FAFSA results, we will work to put together the best possible aid offer for you. Your offer could include a combination of merit- and need-based aid. Keep reading to learn more!
Types of AidNeed-Based Aid
Need-based aid comes in two forms: grants (free money or gift aid) and loans (money that must be re-paid). This aid comes from government funds and UF. UF proudly offers generous aid packages for low-income and first-generation students. In fact, many graduate debt-free! See two options below.
The UF Excellence Grant
For In-State Students
The UF Excellence Grant honors the academic achievement of high school students as they first enter college. This grant is awarded to in-state, low-income undergraduate students based on the information from the FAFSA, and is renewable for up to four years.
UF Excellence GrantMachen Florida Opportunity Scholars (MFOS)
For In-State Students
The Machen Florida Opportunity Scholars Program provides financial resources and individual support for in-state, first-generation, low-income undergraduate students. This scholarship provides funding up to full financial need*financial need for four years of undergraduate study.
MFOS* What is "financial need"? The FAFSA is used to create a Student Aid Index (SAI), which creates a number representing how much a family should be able to pay for college. Colleges determine "financial need" by calculating the difference between the cost of attendance and your SAI.
$319 Million
UF is proud to have awarded $319 million in grants and scholarships to undergraduate students this year.

Merit-Based Aid
UF students are exceptional, and we view every applicant as a high achiever. While we can't award scholarships to everyone, we are pleased to offer merit-based scholarships to a select group. No separate scholarship application is needed; we review the materials submitted with your admission application.
